This November, the Nordic countries in partnership with Nordic Innovation are planning the Nordic healthcare roadshow Krankenhaus Karawane to promote successful Nordic healthcare solutions from the hospital sector in Germany.

Denmark is project leader and coordinator of the initiative, based on positive experience from a previous event in January 2018 focusing on the Danish hospital sector, which proved to be a great success among German stakeholders.

Krankenhaus Karawane is four-day long event with two days in Berlin and two days in Munich, providing 20-25 Nordic companies an opportunity to present their respective home market in this sector.

This project is co-financed by Nordic Innovation through the Nordic Welfare Solutions program. Nordic Welfare Solutions is one of six flagship projects that makes up the five Nordic prime ministers’ initiative Nordic Solutions to Global Challenges, which is coordinated by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The German healthcare market and the need for Nordic solutions

Germany, with around 80 m. inhabitants and a GDP of 3.5 bn. USD, is the largest economy in Europe and one of the world’s biggest export nations. The German healthcare sector amounted to 374 billion EUR in 2017.

Hospitals in Germany are financed based on the dualistic principle: the federal states are responsible for financing investments whilst the statutory health insurances bear all the costs that incurred for the treatment of patients. As the German federal states have increasingly cut hospital funding in recent decades, a backlog of investments exists, leading to increased pressure towards policy makers for the efficient use of hospital budgets. In this climate, policy makers are looking increasingly to international success stories for solutions.

The Krankenhaus Karawane aims to present the best practices from the Nordic countries to our German counterparts to inspire dialogue and facilitate cooperation. The Nordic experience will be described with focus on Digitalization, Emergency care, Personalized Care and Telehealth. These are four “sector tracks” that permeate the modern Nordic hospital from prevention and diagnostics to treatment and rehabilitation.

All the Nordic countries are in Germany and in their respective home country actively involved in the planning of Krankenhaus Karawane. It is our believe that this is an unique opportunity for the Nordic countries together to promote the Nordic branding and storytelling of Nordic health and welfare solutions. And moreover, strengthen the Nordic network of companies with innovative Nordic solutions to be exported to Germany.
